Please send us an email describing how you would like to use the studio space to enliven upcountry. This is a free service to the Amador Community.

Natural Dye Workshop

Learn about the wonderful art of natural dyeing in this bundle dyeing workshop!  In this 2.5hrs workshop, led by Mikaela of Feather Me Orange, you will gain an understanding of and learn to use various natural dyestuffs to prepare and create your very own bundle dyed silk bandana.  Come explore and experiment with the art of bundle dyeing.

This workshop will cover:

  • Introduction to natural dye plants, mordants & color/dye modifiers & the use of them in the technique of bundle dyeing (mordanting process will not take place in this class, Mikaela will have already prepared your silks).

  • A brief history of natural dyeing and dye stuffs around the world.

  • Introduction to protein & cellulose based fibers, we will be using protein based fibers in this workshop.

  • Overview of natural dyestuffs used in bundle dyeing. Examples: onions skins, marigolds, cochineal, log wood etc…

  • How to bundle dye on silk & a resources list to get you started at home!

  • Each student will leave with one silk satin 35’ x 35’ bandana/scarf.

Class fee includes instruction & all the necessary supplies & materials (including dyestuffs and fabrics). No prior experience necessary - beginners welcome!

Open House with Adrien Segal

he Pony Farm Residency Project is thrilled to announce that Adrien Segal has been awarded our June 2023 artist residency and will stay in Pioneer June 11-17th. Oakland-based artist and writer Segal has been making waves in the international art scene since 2007 with their stunning and data-inspired work. Their pieces can be found in permanent collections like the National Academy of Science in Washington D.C., the Museum of Art in Wood in Philadelphia, and even the City of Homer in Alaska.
       Adrien has been awarded several Artist Residencies across the US, Canada, and Europe and was honored as the US-UK Fulbright Scholar at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee in Scotland in 2022. They have also served as the Latham Fellow at IIT Institute of Design in Chicago and as a Visiting Artist at San Diego State University, Benchspace Cork in Ireland, and the University of Lethbridge in Canada.
         Adrien is currently a professor of Art and Design at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, where they earned their BFA in 2007. They continue to create unique sculptures out of their studio on the former Naval Base in Alameda, California.
       Their work explores the intersection between science and emotion, questioning the traditional scientific methods of studying natural systems. They draw inspiration from landscape, science, history, emotion, and perception to create a sensory experience that is accessible and intuitive. The Pony Farm will be hosting an artist open house on June 16th, where the public can come and see
      Adrien's amazing work and talk with hear from them about their creative process. Don't miss this opportunity to experience Adrien's work firsthand! Zach Bell Film production

Between January 5-15, 2023, an experimental film will be produced through the Pony Farm Residency Program. Directed by filmmaker Zach Bell, this project will be created in a workshop format bringing together local artists and interested members of the community, to be shot in the local environment. We are seeking artists of all kinds for the film, including actors, writers, and musicians among others. The film will be created from scratch starting on the 5th and will be shaped entirely by the participants in the workshop, so if you have an interest in film or moving image work outside of these areas as well, please apply here! The members of the workshop will all receive a percentage ownership of the final product.

Liat Berdugo is an artist and writer whose work investigates embodiment, labor, and militarization in relation to capitalism, technological utopianism, and the Middle East. Her work has been exhibited and screened at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), MoMA PS1 (New York), Transmediale (Berlin), V2_Lab for the Unstable Media (Rotterdam), and The Wrong Biennale (online), among others. Her writing appears in Rhizome, Temporary Art Review, Real Life, Places, and The Institute for Network Cultures, among others, and her latest book is The Weaponized Camera in the Middle East (Bloomsbury/I.B.Tauris, 2021). She is one half of the art collective, Anxious to Make, and is the co-founder of the Living Room Light Exchange, a monthly new media art series. Berdugo received an MFA from RISD and a BA from Brown University. She is currently an associate professor of Art + Architecture at the University of San Francisco. Berdugo lives and works in Oakland, CA.

Amel has been advocating and teaching about North African Dances and

culture for over forty years. From London to New Zealand to Chile and

beyond, Amel Tafsout, has been a driving force for the North African

culture all over the world. She brings first-hand knowledge and experience

to the classroom. She has dedicated her life not only to raising awareness

about her dance culture but also to facilitate a dialogue and building cultural

bridges about Arab-North African women. Fluent in five languages, Amel

lectures, teaches, performs, and conducts anthropological research.

This event is gender-inclusive and invited any and all persons to join in this festive clothing exchange. Life Drawing with Model- 3 hr Class

The Pony Farm will be hosting model, Teddy Flory for a three hour life-modeling session. Teddy is a professional artist model who has sat for world-class artists in the greater Sacramento area. The class will consist of a variety of poses from five minutes to 45 minute sittings, with intermittent breaks. This is not a full-nude sitting, however it will be thematic with props and costumes. Small appetizers and snacks will be provided. Guests are encouraged to bring their own beverages. The class will be held in the Pony Farm Art Studio and will be limited to a 15 person capacity.
